The area of Thornton was made up of mostly farmland up until 1953, at that time Sam Hoffman bought a plot of land off Washington Street approximately seven miles north of Denver. The town Sam laid out was the first completely planned local community in Adams County and the first to offer complete municipal services from a single tax levy, including recreation services and totally free garbage pickup.

As of 2010 the City of Thornton is the sixth most populous city in the state, with a population of 118,722, an increase of 44.2%. The city is also home to over 81 city parks, 80 miles of trails, several recreational facilities, and nearly 2,000 acres of parks and open spaces.

Nestled 10 miles north of Denver, the city of Thornton has a population of approximately 118,772 residents. It is the 6th most populated city in the entire state of Colorado. The area was mostly farmland for many years until it began getting developed in the early 50s. They developed the Thornton Community Association to help ensure the community’s development plans were followed.
